Shop locally
Supporting your local shops and buying locally sourced products can help cut down your travel, reduce air pollution and protect Wiltshire’s local environment. Wiltshire’s weekly markets provide a variety of goods. There are also farmers’ markets and special events such as the French, Italian and Christmas markets.
You could take the train to one of Wiltshire’s bigger shopping centres such as Salisbury, Chippenham or Bradford-on-Avon. You can also get a combined bus-rail ticket to go to Marlborough or a bus to Devizes. Find more shopping ideas at Visit Wiltshire.
Walking or cycling to the shops is a great way to fit some exercise into your week. Large panniers, baskets or trailers can make cycling an option when you have bulky goods to buy.
You can top-up a local shop with the occasional longer trip for bulky goods, or think about getting a delivery. Local vegetable box schemes offer you the freshest produce and are a good way to try out new recipes.
If you do need to go to a larger supermarket, then a wheeled shopping bag or a rucksack can make it easier to shop by bus. If you already get the bus to work then a season ticket can help you save even more money. The Salisbury Park & Ride pre-pay tickets are another great way to cut your costs, and the buses drop you directly into the heart of Salisbury.
Please see our Get Cycling leaflet for more information on using your bike for shopping.
