Cycling groups

This page lists groups within Wiltshire that we work with. Some of these groups are very sporty, while some are more for gentle leisure riders, or for people who want to improve cycling facilities.

ridesocial.co.uk – lets you organise your own bike rides using your favourite routes. Share your ride for local cyclists to join and before you know it you have your own cycling group.

Amesbury and the Bourne Valley

The Bourne Valley working group of the Amesbury Area Board which brings together Wiltshire Council, Sustrans, local parish councils and other stakeholders to discuss cycle improvements  along the Bourne Valley to connect Salisbury, the Winterbournes, Porton and  Amesbury.   COGS is also active in this area.

Bradford on Avon

Bradford on Avon Climate Friendly have an active travel group.

Chippenham

Chippenham Wheelers cater for riders of all ages and abilities, with a strong focus on developing young cyclists.  They run five annual time trial events as well as weekly rides for young people and senior people in the summer. The Castle Combe circuit is also used for a variety of cycling experiences for children, such as lessons in bike handling skills from qualified instructors in the British Cycling Go-Ride scheme.

Chippenham Town Council have an interest in promoting cycling, although there is no formal voluntary group.

Corsham

Corsham Cycling Club welcomes riders of all levels and abilities and aims to have a training ride every weekend as well as ad hoc rides at riders’  discretion.

Devizes

The Devizes Air Quality and Transport group work on improving cycle facilities. You can contact us for more information.

Devizes Town Cycling Club caters for all abilities. There are regular rides taking in some of the beautiful Wiltshire countryside.

Malmesbury

The Malmesbury Area Path Group   looks at improving paths in and around Malmesbury.

Marlborough

Marlborough Transition has an active travel group which promotes cycle infrastructure improvements in the town.

Friends of the Railway Path  promotes improvements to the railway path (NCN 482) which links Marlborough to Swindon.

Salisbury and southern Wiltshire

COGS bike (The Cycling Opportunities Group for Salisbury) runs a programme of family leisure rides, weekday evening rides and various Sunday rides throughout the year. They also campaign to improve all kinds of facilities for cyclists in the area, from cycle paths to cycle parking, and keep cycling safety at the forefront of local issues and developments.

There is also the Salisbury Cycle Liaison Panel which meets quarterly. It brings together Wiltshire Council, Salisbury Town Council, COGS, Sustrans and other members on an adhoc basis. The Salisbury Road and Mountain biking club offers the people of Salisbury and surrounding area a fun and safe way to train and socialise within the cycling environment.

The Charford Way group promotes improvements to cycle routes between Salisbury and Alderholt linking Alderbury, Whaddon and Downton.

Sarum Velo promotes having fun and enjoying cycling, be it going out with a few mates or a group on a club run.

Tidworth

Tidworth Freeride manages and maintains Tidworth Freeride Bike Park for mountain biking.

Warminster

The Black Cannon Collective is a local mountain bike (MTB) club based around Longleat forest, and is run by local mountain bikers. The purpose of the club is to support and develop the local MTB community and MTB trails.

The Warminster Cycle Group organises regular rides including the annual Warminster Wobble  and campaigns for cycle improvements in the area.

Westbury

Westbury Wheelers is a club for riding and socialising. They run off-road rides in winter and on-road rides in summer.

Wider area

The Kennet & Avon canal path user group looks at managing and improving the canal path which runs through Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Melksham, Devizes and Pewsey

The Campaign for Better Transport have a Bath area group which covers areas around western Wiltshire.

Sustrans Ranger groups

This group organises social rides and workdays as well as supporting the maintenance of the National Cycle Network.

The current maps showing where improvements may be made can be seen on Wiltshire Council’s website. These were published in 2011 and are due to be updated in 2015. Many of the groups listed above co-ordinate feedback to the council about these networks.

Areas around Swindon

MTB Swindon is an independent mountain biking club that runs rides, holidays, training courses and social events. Some of these are in the wider Wiltshire area.

Swindon Road Club is open to anyone interested in cycling for enjoyment, fitness or sport. They run regular rides and promote time trials in the Wiltshire area.
