Works begin in Bedwyn
27 Nov 2014Almost £40,000 of improvement works have begun at Bedwyn Station this week.
Eight additional parking spaces are being added at the station as part of a partnership project between Wiltshire Council and First Great Western. This follows the new cycle shelter and ticket vending machine which were installed there last August. The improvement works are being funded by Wiltshire Council and First Great Western, and are supported by the Bedwyn Rail User Group.
First Great Western’s Bedwyn Station Manager Alison Stone said:
“First Great Western recognises the key role that rail travel has in supporting the local and national economy and we are delighted to be able to start this work to improve access to this station and the full range of services we offer.”
“During the previous franchise over £85 million has been invested across our network of 210 stations, by working with rail industry partners, the DfT, and local authorities.”
Horace Prickett, Wiltshire Council portfolio holder for transport said: “We are committed to green initiatives and successfully bid for Government funding to bring about key improvements to our rail stations. The £4.25m we received has helped support additional train services and provide better facilities at rail stations, including new waiting shelters, travel information, footways and cycleways, and cycle racks to make using the train a more attractive option for travellers than taking a private car.”
Claire Perry MP for the Devizes Constituency said: “Our train services are hugely important to the local economy and I have campaigned over the last four years to ensure that the fast and frequent services at Bedwyn and Pewsey are maintained. This work continues, but I am delighted that First Great Western has commenced work to provide more off-street car parking spaces at Bedwyn Station and this will be an enormous help to passengers and to local residents.”
The work is due to complete at the beginning of the New Year.
