Get Wiltshire Walking

27 Nov 2014

On Wednesday 26th November we joined the Get Wiltshire Walking group in Bradford on Avon for one of their weekly walks.  All the Get Wiltshire Walking groups are led by a trained walk leader and ours for the morning walk was Sarah.  There were about 15 of us in total and Sarah informed us that we’d be walking for about an hour to Avoncliff and back.  Starting at the Tourist Information Centre we walked towards Holy Trinity Church and up through some of the picturesque back streets of Bradford on Avon and out along the quiet road which takes you towards Avoncliff.   The group were very friendly, with one lady explaining that she had only recently moved to the town and was looking to meet new friends whilst exploring her new area.  Sarah said that the walks are a great way to encourage more people to get active and improve their health and well-being, whilst some walkers simply enjoy the peace and quiet of going for a stroll.  One member of the group even did the whole walk, very ably I might add, on crutches!  At Avoncliff canal aqueduct we stopped briefly and took in the lovely views over the river and surrounding countryside.  Then we started heading back along the canal towards Bradford on Avon.  The end of our walk took us by the side of the Tithe Barn and back along the river path where some of us were lucky enough to even spot a kingfisher!  Back at the Tourist Information Centre it was time for a cup of tea and a chat.

We really enjoyed our walk and would highly recommend it.  All the walks are free and last about an hour and providing you are independently mobile, everyone is welcome. There are also starter walks if you are new to walking or recovering from an illness or injury.
