Our Travel Advisors are out and about
07 Jul 2014Connecting Wiltshire travel advisors will be visiting selected households in Trowbridge, Salisbury and Chippenham from July to September. They will also be working with major employers and schools in these towns and in Bradford-on-Avon, Devizes and Malmesbury. They will be offering travel information, advice and incentives to help promote public transport, walking and cycling.
In the first year of the programme, travel advisors visited over 4000 homes in Salisbury, Trowbridge, Chippenham and Bradford on Avon. 82% of people contacted found the conversation useful and half participated in the programme making new journeys by bus, on foot, by cycle and by rail. Over a quarter of the participants had not used these means of travel before. Overall car driving fell from around by 4% in the target areas.
Over 200 people agreed to take up a travel challenge and three quarters of these challenges were completed. Many people have now changed their travel habits, driving less on journeys to work, the shops and for leisure purposes.
More people in these areas are now driving less and using public transport more, cycling and walking more and If they keep it up, and 96% say they will, they will realise the health benefits to themselves and the environmental and traffic congestion benefits in their communities.
