M4 Junction 16 improvement works
22 Jul 2016Work to transform Junction 16 of the M4 will start towards the end of summer to ensure the major highway interchange can cope with forecast future traffic levels and cater for future development in the surrounding areas.
The construction costs are expected to be approximately £10 million and will see the following improvements:
- improvements to the junction’s drainage
- widened slip roads
- replacement of traffic lights
- a dedicated right turn from A3102 Swindon Road to Hay Lane
- improvements to the entries and exits onto the junction
- a new footway from A3102 Swindon Road to Hay Lane
The motorway junction redesign is a requirement of the outline planning permission for the major housing development at nearby Wichelstowe in Swindon and needs to be complete before the 1,100th property on the site is occupied.
The works will be funded by the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the Wichelstowe Joint Venture. It is being delivered by Swindon Borough Council in partnership with Highways England and Wiltshire Council.
The junction will be open to traffic at all times, but there is likely to be some disruption to motorists.
A contractor for the work is expected to be appointed in the coming weeks with the project anticipated to be complete by Spring 2018.
