Free bike loan scheme launched

31 Aug 2016

The Trowbridge Bike Workshop has launched a new scheme which offers individuals on a low income, the opportunity to borrow a quality refurbished bicycle for free.  The first loan bike has been handed over to 22 year old Ashton Griffin (Ms), who has supported by the project over the past few months.

Supported by the Wiltshire Community Transport Fund, the Wheels to Independence project is for Wiltshire residents who are living on benefits or on a low income.  The scheme is targeted at helping individuals to overcome transport barriers they may face in accessing work or training opportunities, social activities and health-related appointments.

At the end of the loan period, individuals can either return the equipment to the bike workshop or purchase it at a discounted rate of 50% off.

Mike Sharrett, who is the Bike Workshop Manager said “Transport difficulties can prevent people on low income from accessing work, training and other opportunities, which could improve their chances of a healthier lifestyle, with increased independence and improved employment prospects.  Travel can be costly and particularly difficult in rural areas.  Bikes however can provide a healthy and affordable transport option, over a short to moderate distances.  Despite this, we know cycling is less popular in lower income households.”

Agencies can refer individuals to the scheme and self-referrals are also accepted. Loan bikes can be borrowed from the Trowbridge bike workshop during normal opening hours: 09.00 – 17.30 Mon-Sat. Find out more here.
