Active Travel Fun at Bemerton St John School
24 Mar 2015Bemerton St John School in Salisbury hosted a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and an Alice in Wonderland themed treasure hunt on 17th March. The aim of the event was to celebrate the new footway build-out, promote a safe crossing space and encourage parents to use the Cricket Club’s car park to ‘park and stride’ along the new path, rather than adding to the congestion at the school gates.
The event was co-ordinated by Connecting Wiltshire and Bike It officers in collaboration with Sustrans. Robin Imeson, Bike It Plus officer said “Parking at the cricket club rather than outside the school makes the whole environment around the school much safer and friendlier, and gives children a good dose of fresh air and exercise meaning they come to school more alert and ready to learn which is far better and probably just as quick as they wouldn’t have to sit in traffic. All the kids were fantastic and had a lot of fun doing the scavenger hunt and decorating the new pavement with chalk.”
Many parents received Connecting Wiltshire goody bags and one parent helped to supervise a group of pupil traffic officers, who were giving out notices to any vehicles illegally parked!
